FAQ for Students

Getting a Music Teacher

How can I get a music teacher?

Follow these 3 steps:

  1. Enter your request for a teacher here and we will begin shortlisting teachers for you according to your preferences.
  2. Within 1-2 days, we will send you a shortlisted list of teachers available through Whatsapp, where you can then select your teacher.
  3. After a successful selection, you will receive a confirmation email and you are ready for your first lesson!
Can I trust the music teachers from Ragtime?

We value the quality of teachers and do our best to ensure the quality is upheld. When each teacher signs up with us, we verify their credentials and experiences before accepting him/her. In addition, we get students to rate their teachers as well for us to know how well our teachers teach, which further improves our understanding of the quality of our teachers.

If you wish to personally review the teacher’s qualifications, you may make a request to our coordinators when they contact you to inform the teacher to bring his/her certificates on the first lesson.

Payment

Is this service free?

Yes, it’s free! You are only required to pay for the lessons conducted and nothing else.

Instead of paying the first 2 lessons' fees to the teacher, you are required to pay them directly to Ragtime. This fee is taken as commission from the teachers for using our service. The payment due date, 3 days after your 2nd lesson, is indicated in the invoice for your reference.

For subsequent lessons (i.e. 3rd lesson onwards), you will pay the teacher directly.

How do I pay the first 2 lesson’s fees?

We accept bank transfers via FAST and PayNow. The bank account number will be sent to you with the invoice.

What is the price of each lesson?

Teachers decide on what price they would like to receive. Generally, the higher the qualifications of the teacher and the more experienced the teacher is, the higher the price of each lesson.

The teacher may also charge more if he/she is teaching at your place. Nonetheless, you may refer to our pricing list to see the current market rates.

How do I pay the teacher?

We do not have a restriction imposed on how students should pay teachers. You have to discuss with the teacher on the preferred method.

We recommend paying per lesson to prevent misunderstandings (e.g., forgetting to pay for lessons, miscalculating the number of lessons that has been conducted etc.)

Some teachers may have their own set of requirements, which would be sent to you before you are matched with them. Please do ensure that their requirements are alright with you before proceeding to confirm. This set of requirements will last for the entirety of the music lessons, unless otherwise stated.

Lessons

Where are the lessons conducted at?

You get to choose - teacher’s place or your home!

Not to worry, we require all teachers who teach at home to provide pictures of the learning environment. Each environment is screened through carefully before we allow teachers to opt to teach at their own place.

How are lessons conducted?

We do not have a fixed syllabus that we require our teachers to follow since every teacher has their own teaching style. We recommend you to communicate with the teacher and request for a roadmap on the teacher’s plans to see what’s best for you.

Do I have to purchase an instrument prior to the lessons?

If you wish to learn at home:

  • Yes, you need to purchase an instrument! Please ensure that you have one at home before the teacher starts his/her lessons with you.

If you wish to learn at the teacher’s place:

  • If you haven’t purchased an instrument, we recommend that you purchase one so that you can practice at home. However, if you don’t, we wouldn’t advise rushing into purchasing as the teacher may provide valuable advice on which instrument to choose.
Can I terminate lessons if the teacher isn’t suitable?

Yes of course, you can terminate any time after the first lesson.

However, you will have to pay for the lesson(s) conducted and inform us of the termination at least 24 hours before the next lesson. You will be charged 50% of the next lesson’s fee if you inform us within the 24 hours of the next lesson.

Do note that you are expected to complete the first lesson once you confirm a teacher. If you back out before the first lesson commences, you will still be charged the first lesson’s fee as administrative charges.

Can I postpone lessons?

For the first 2 lessons, it would be best if you are able to make it on the arranged date and timing. However, in unforeseen circumstances in which you have to postpone lessons, please inform us and the teacher (if you have his/her contact number) at least 24 hours in advance of the lesson via WhatsApp message.

  • Do note that if you do not inform at least 24 hours in advance, you might be charged 50% of the lesson fees to compensate the teacher for the lost time (for example if they are already travelling to your place).

For subsequent lessons, you can then liaise with the teachers directly to make any changes and postponements of the lessons. However, for the welfare of our teachers, please inform them at least 24 hours in advance.

Can I set my own requirements for the teacher?

Yes, absolutely. Please inform us of your requirements in the request form or email it to us at enquiry@ragtime.sg.

Do note that certain teachers have their own set of requirements too, so make sure you're able to commit to them before starting lessons with the teacher. We will inform you of the teacher's requirements before you select your teacher.
