FAQ for Teachers

Signing Up

How do I sign up as a music teacher?

Head over to the online form and sign up. Do note that you have to be minimally 18 years old to be able to sign up with us as a music teacher.

Are there any requirements to become a music teacher at Ragtime?

We require you to be proficient at the instrument or field that you are intending to teach.

For teachers with qualifications:

  • For classical music, we only accept teachers who have attained Grade 8 or above for ABRSM or equivalent examination boards.
  • Additionally, we also require you to do a short write-up on your experiences and qualifications, and upload your certificates for verification purposes.

For teachers without qualifications

  • We recognise that there are musical talents who are extremely proficient with their instruments despite not having taken exams, especially those without a classical background.
  • If you fall in this category, you need to do a write-up on your experiences and/or submit a CV to prove your proficiency. Additionally, we require a 5-10 min video recording of your playing, where your face and body from your head to toe can be clearly seen. Please make sure this video demonstrates the current level of your abilities.

I can’t find my instrument in the list, what should I do?

You can always write to us at enquiry@ragtime.sg regarding your instrument! If we garner sufficient interest from students in the instrument you teach, we may consider listing your instrument on our website.

Can I teach an instrument I did not receive a qualification for?

Yes, provided that you have had sufficient experience in playing the instrument. If we deem that your listed experiences are not sufficient, we will automatically remove it from the list of instruments you are able to teach.

I have a music studio at home, can I teach at home?

Yes of course! There is an option to teach at home in our sign up form.

However, you are required to submit pictures of the learning environment to prove that it is conducive for your student.

Can foreigners register as music teachers?

Please check with the relevant authority on whether you are allowed to do freelance work. We are unable to advise you on this matter. However, if you have been granted the permission to do freelance work in Singapore by the relevant authorities, please feel free to join our teaching team!

Matching Process

What is the matching process like?

You will receive a confirmation email after signing up as a music teacher. Our staff will look through your profile and send you an email on whether your application has been successful. This email will come with instructions on how you can start receiving assignments on WhatsApp if your application has been successful.

In the WhatsApp chat, you will be able to see the assignments available and apply for them. After you have applied for an assignment, you will receive an email informing you if you have successfully gotten it within 2-3 days.

Why is my application rejected even though I’m qualified?

There could be many reasons, but the most likely one would be submitting an incomplete application. Please ensure that your application is complete to minimise time wasted.

How do I apply for assignments on WhatsApp?

There is a code written on every assignment. Simply click on the Google Form link on the assignment itself, fill up your particulars (for verification purposes) and the assignment code. It should not take more than 5 minutes for you to complete the form.

Is there any limit to the number of assignments I can sign up for at one time?

Nope! However, please do not sign up for assignments that clash in timings as there is a chance that you might get both assignments. If we see that you have applied for two assignments that clash, we will ignore both applications. Otherwise, there are no limits to the number of assignments you apply for.

How do I send my students for the events you organise?

We will send out emails on the upcoming events, in which you can register your students with the form attached. We recommend you to register your students as performance opportunities are very important to instill confidence in them. It also allows them to be exposed to other musicians out there.

How can I suggest events for you to plan?

We gladly welcome suggestions for ways to help improve students’ learning experiences or teachers’ teaching experiences. Please contact us at enquiry@ragtime.sg for any ideas.

Conducting of Lessons

How should I conduct my music lessons?

How you conduct your music lessons is entirely up to you. However, do provide students and/or their parents with an overview of your plan and frequently communicate with them on updates of the student’s progress. If you are new to the teaching industry, do head to our blog (coming soon) on tips on how you can carry out your lesson.

Do I need to purchase the lesson materials?

You are recommended to purchase the lesson materials (books, manuscript etc.) for the students as you would know best which books they require. However, prior to purchasing any materials, do seek permission from the students and/or their parents so that you can get reimbursed.

What is the minimum commitment?

For assignments that have a stipulated end date, your minimum commitment would be from the start date to the end date. Only take on these assignments if you can fully commit to it.

For assignments that do not have an end date, the minimum commitment would be at least 3 months. You will have to inform the student and/or parents of the termination of lessons at least 1 month before the termination date for them to find a replacement teacher in time.

Being a teacher comes with great responsibility. We expect our teachers to be committed to help students learn their instruments and not leave abruptly without any valid reasons. Teachers who show irresponsible or unethical behaviours may be blacklisted without warning.

Can I set my own requirements for the student?

Yes, especially if your existing requirements differ from our stipulations. Do email us at enquiry@ragtime.sg with the set of requirements you'll want us to send to the student each time you apply for an assignment. Make sure that it is reasonable and agreeable by the student before you start your lessons with them.

What happens if the student cancels the lesson at the last minute?

If you were not informed about the changes at least 3 hours before the lesson starts, you may be able to claim up to 50% of the lesson fee as compensation. Please contact us on WhatsApp to request for the claim.

Can I postpone lessons?

For the first 2 lessons, you are expected to be able to make it on the arranged date and timing. However, in unforeseen circumstances in which you have to postpone lessons, please inform us and the student (or student’s parent) at least 24 hours in advance of the lesson via WhatsApp.

  • If you have an emergency to attend to, please contact us immediately and submit an official document or a written letter as soon as possible.
  • If you happen to fall sick, please contact us immediately and submit an MC on the same day.

For subsequent lessons, you can then liaise with the students directly to make any changes and postponements of the lessons.

Can I cancel lessons?

Cancelling before the minimum commitment date is not allowed unless there is a valid reason. Please be responsible for your actions.

You can cancel the future lessons after the minimum commitment date. However, do give sufficient notice (i.e. 1 month before) to the student and/or parents so that they can make arrangements.

Payment

How much is the agency fee?

We collect a fixed rate of 2 lessons worth of lesson fees as our commission. Students and/or their parents will pay us directly for the first 2 lessons. Subsequently, they will pay you the lesson fees directly.

How am I paid for the music lessons?

You will not be paid for the first 2 lessons as the fees are part of the commission. The fees for the first 2 lessons will be made directly to Ragtime by the students. For subsequent lessons, you will then receive payment directly from the students.

Can I receive payments in advance?

No, unless you have specifically stated in your requirements to have them pay upfront. This requirement must be acknowledge by us and the student and/or parent before your match with the student. Generally, we recommend collecting the fees per lesson or per month, only after the lessons are conducted.

How will I be paid if the lessons are terminated within the first 2 lessons?

If you are the one who initiates the termination of the lesson, you are not entitled to any payment (i.e. you receive $0 for teaching the one or two lessons).

Otherwise, the lesson fees will be divided equally between Ragtime and you. In this event, the student and/or parent will first deliver the fees to Ragtime. We will subsequently transfer half of the fees to your bank account.
